The photos and ideas on the following pages are examples of kindergarten literacy activities from my classroom and from Internet chatboards. Updated Examples of Literacy. Begin with a small number of books to choose from in a classroom library and work on book behavior. Students may choose a book from book boxes leveled books or theme books. Students may choose books to read on their own, with a partner buddy reading or with a book buddy stuffed animal. The teacher may want to stay at this center and read to individuals or let them read to her. Later in the year guided reading groups may be part of this center. Make a rule that children must put the book back on the shelf after they have “read it”.

Literacy centers offer meaningful learning experiences where students work independently or collaboratively to meet literacy goals. Students in our classrooms vary greatly in their literacy needs and ability levels. As a result, it is necessary to provide multiple opportunities for students to read, write, participate in meaningful experiences, and collaborate with others so that they can develop their ability to read and comprehend text s. A literacy center is a physical area or station designated for specific learning purposes.

It is designed to provide appropriate materials to help students work independently or collaboratively with partners or in small groups to meet literacy goals. A literacy center can be portable, temporary or permanent.

Later in the year guided reading groups may be part of this center. Students do games, file folders activities, read the room, or use the overhead at this center. But a “Free Write” is valuable, too and some of them love that opportunity!

Having a cache of go-to literacy activities that are meaningful, flexible, and able to be completed by students independently is a teacher necessity. The best literacy centers build autonomy, help students practice key skills, and free you up to teach small groups or give support elsewhere. All they had to do was pick up a word and place it into the right container. I told them the containers were hungry for the right sight words that matched the one on their tummy, and feeding them the wrong one would give them a tummy ache.

And really easy to differentiate and change up!
